Getting Organized
Organization and Time Management


In this session, students:
• Organize their backpacks, planners and binders
• Learn strategies for organizing their lockers and homework stations
• “Walk through” their average week at school to put into practice the habits of a successful student
• Set goals, create an action plan and learn self-tracking techniques in order to maintain their new
habits over the course of their school year

 

OCTOBER 28, 2012
Taking Better Notes
Effective Listening, Note-Taking and Reading Strategies

Through this session, students:
• Learn reading strategies designed to help them
synthesize large amounts of information into usable and retainable formats
• Practice taking notes in multiple formats for a variety of school subjects and from different sources
• Learn how to be active classroom participants using
modern listening techniques



NOVEMBER 4, 2012
Streamlining the Research Process
Research Strategies and Prioritizing to Improve Grades

For this session, students:
• Survey current research resources and reading
strategies used by top researchers and academics
• Learn the most efficient ways to collect information
and use multiple sources to improve their papers
• Learn how to evaluate sources to rank the quality of the information provided
• Analyze a variety of research papers to understand
the elements that result in an “A” paper
• Use reverse-planning techniques to break down long-term assignments into smaller chunks and focus on necessary tasks in a logical order, for better prioritizing

Preparing for Tests
Test-Taking Skills


With this session, students:
• Learn how to prepare for tests and how to predict
teacher questions for better answers
• Self-assess what they know and what they need to
review for tests
• Learn strategies to maximize the time spent studying
• Learn to pace themselves and check over their work
• Discover the secrets of effective test taking used by SAT preparation courses
• Discover the key to writing well-organized test essays

About Our Instructor: Saskia Nilsen is a Moses Brown Faculty member with 15+ years of teaching experience spanning the United States and Europe. In addition to classroom teaching, Saskia has worked as a curriculum consultant with a focus on study skills, assessment and best-practice teacher training. She has a specific interest in brain-based research and translating breakthroughs in this field into practical classroom and study skill applications. Saskia joins the RITES team as a private tutor and as a study skills teacher for their middle school and high school learning strategy classes.
